Family Holiday Photos: {7 tips to finding the perfect family photo wardrobe}

Last month I started planning my family's wardrobe for our annual family photos.  Finding an outfit for me was first and foremost.  Let's be honest, until I find an outfit, there is no way I can tell what the rest of the family will be wearing.  I decided that no matter what, I really wanted to wear my super cute, Aurora Blue, Rock Star Super Skinny Jeans from Old Navy.  I don't always like the things that Old Navy has in my size.  It's usually too big, or too loose and just doesn't fit properly.  When they advertised their new colorful skinnies, I had to see what the fuss was about.  O….M….G!!!  I was in love!  They were the perfect length!!! {I'm a very tall, 5'2"}

After finding my pants I went in to Old Navy looking for outfits for the four of us  Everything I found was dead on!  The sweaters and tops for my boys were adorable and my husband's shirt was just the right fit. With just one trip to Old Navy, I got the entire family outfitted for our shoot.  This is what I ended up with:

Aurora Blue Rock Star Skinny JeansSea Salt 3/4 Sleeve Blouse, Emerald Polka Dot Gauze Scarf
Men's Everyday Classic Regular Fit Shirt in Green Buffalo Check

Striped Rib-Knit Crew Sweater in Rugby Green,  Boys Regular Fit Jeans in Fred

Shawl Sweater Cardi for Baby in Navy, Twil Cargos for Baby

Cabbie Hat for Baby in Gray Plaid

When looking for a wardrobe for family pictures, I like to follow the following tips:

{7 Tips to choosing a wardrobe for family photos}

1.  Choose YOUR outfit first.- If you know what you want to wear then finding an outfit for the rest of your family will be less stressful. After all, they are doing this for you anyway, so make sure you like your own outfit and then you can delegate theirs.

2.  Decide on a Style.-  Do you want to be dressy or casual?  Knowing that will help you narrow down wardrobe for all of you.

3.  Mix patterns and solids.- Use patterns and solids to create the right balance in your photos.

4.  Avoid logos.-  Having logos on your clothing can be distracting and take attention away from the face.

5.  Ensure that everyone is comfortable in their clothing.-  Having an uncomfortable child can take time and energy away from the shoot. For example, my youngest son decided he hated his cabbie hat, which I snuck on him right before the shoot started.  He took ONE picture with it and then ripped it off when he realized it made him uncomfortable and itchy.  When you have kids in the picture, comfort will make or break your shoot.

6.  Location, location, location!-  Choose the right setting for your photos.  The background colors might affect how your clothing looks on camera.   It also affects how your family feels in that setting which can potentially be portrayed through the lens.

7.  Collage your outfits.-  Lay your clothes out the week before and take pictures of each individual outfit.  Then, use an app (I used Fotorus) to collage it together and see how it will look as a unit.  Does it coordinate?  Is it cohesive and balanced?  If there is something you don't like, you have time to return items and make changes.

Collaged using Fotorus App.

I'm certainly no expert in photography, but I do think these things are most helpful when considering a coordinating outfit for the entire family and when looking to have a successful session.  I happen to think that this year we had a great photo shoot experience.  We had a melt down {or two} but the pictures turned out great.  There were a few pouty faces, sweat pearls and tears but somehow they were a perfect representation of our family.  Here's a sneak peek:
