Recently, my five year old son asked me what I used to watch when I was a little girl. I think he expected me to list off all the shows he watches on Disney Junior and Nickelodeon; Octonauts, Jake and the Never Land Pirates, Team Umi Zoomi, etc. When he heard show names like Jem, The Smurfs, Care Bears, Strawberry Shortcake, Full House and Saved by the Bell, he gave me the Arnold look from Different Strokes and I half expected him to say, "What chu talkin' about, Willis?!"
Naturally, he asked if he could watch some of those shows on our television now, to see what they're like. At first, I told him they were no longer on TV, but then I realized that Netflix had just debuted numerous children and family shows from the 80's and 90's so I quickly began my Netflix streaming in order to give him a little 80's and 90's television education. While he was not at all impressed by Jem or Strawberry Shortcake (he asked me to switch it to something else almost immediately) he did LOVE Full House. He laughed at the busy-body neighbor Kimmy Gibler, and practically cried at a couple of the jokes that baby Michelle delivered, including her ever popular imitation of Uncle Jesse, "Have Mercy!" He loved it so much that he's been requesting Full House episodes as his after-school show of choice! I have to admit that makes me happy. I find it so much better than the real-person shows that some of the children's TV networks are airing, where the characters all have way too much makeup on and look about 8 years older than the age they are portraying, as a result.
We're all guilty of posting a #tbt (throwback Thursday) picture or two on Instagram or Facebook every now and then, right? To celebrate this fine Throwback Thursday, here's a picture of my Saved-by-the-Bell-loving days. Perhaps I loved that show because it was so much like me and my friends; minus the I'm-so-excited-Jesse-Spano episode where she goes off the deep end a little bit! HA!
And to continue the #tbt love, Netflix would like to give one of my lucky readers a three-month subscription so you can check out all the amazing new content available for instant streaming. Who knows, you might get your kids hooked on all those awesome shows we used to watch! To enter the giveaway, just use the Rafflecopter widget below:
